"24th Council Quilt Show"
The 24th Council Quilt Show
will open on June 14, 2008. We are scheduled to be in the historic old Adams County
Courthouse. However, the Adams
County Historical
Preservation Commission has received a $250,000.00 grant in order to do
some major
restoration work on the structure of the building. There is a strong
possibility
that this work will have to be accomplished during June and July. If
this
proves to be the case we will be moving to the Council Elementary School.
We should know for sure by mid April so check back. The Council Elementary School is located
along
Highway 95, so it is easy to find.
If we remain at the old courthouse it is located
on Courthouse Hill above Highway 95 as you enter Council from the south.
During our
show, which runs until July 12th, we are open 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
seven
days a week. Admission is $4.00 to help cover expenses for the current
show.
Tickets are good for the run of the show so come back as often as you
want! In
2007 we had about 100 entries and about 1,000 people visiting our
show. Although the old courthouse is a unique building, it was
constructed in 1911 and is not handicap accessible.
The Council area has some wonderful and
interesting shops to visit, including a wonderful fabric store called
"Pins and Needles Quilt Shoppe". No trip to Council will be complete
without planning to check out this wonderful shop. The local
museum, rich in the history of the area, is open five days a week. The
surrounding areas are filled with beautiful mountains to explore, clear
streams
for fishing, and lots of wildlife to view. Our opening weekend will
coincide
with Council's 2nd Wild West Days, which include a barbeque, a paint
ball fight,
and a reenactment of an old west gunfight. During the 4th of July
weekend, festivities
include our annual porcupine race, a parade, a logging contest,
and lots of
food and craft vendors. Plans are underway for a car show on the 4th as
well.
The
theme for the 2008 quilt show is “Town and Country; Home is where your
story
begins”. Your story may begin in the home you grew up in or the first
home you
had as a young adult or married person. Perhaps your story is being
told right
now where you live. Entries need to reflect the location, i.e. town or
county.
You may use a traditional or nontraditional house block and embellish
it as you
wish to reflect the theme. Although
you may feel, at times, like you live in a bee hive or a bear cave, it
can’t be
the “home” in your entry. Include a paragraph explaining your entry. Entries must have a human dwelling as
the focus. Entries can
not have a perimeter larger than 180” total. This year the only special category we are
offering is the theme category. Anything
that does not fit into the theme category will be in the general
category. All
voting will be done by Viewer's Choice.
Each entry
needs a completed entry form sent in by May 30th. If you choose
to mail your entries in this year they must also reach us by May 30th.
Entry
forms and/or quilts should be sent to Marilyn Thompson, P.O. Box 11, Council, ID 83612.
Entries should be brought to the old courthouse (or Elementary
School, if
we move) on Saturday June 7th and Sunday June 8th. Entries will be
accepted
from 10:00 to 4:00 p.m. each day.For your
convenience you can download our rules, entry
form or the entire brochure
We are hosting a challenge
block contest again this year with a couple of new changes. One is that
we have
included two pieces of fabric from our sponsor, P&B Textiles The block must
follow the theme of the show and if
you buy
this year’s block packet and COMPLETE and RETURN it to us by May 30th,
we will
send you next year’s packet free of charge.
Our annual luncheon will be held on June 21st,
with Ranae
Weeks as our special quest speaker. Ranae is a certified "Square in a
Square”
teacher. The only one in Idaho!!
Tickets for the luncheon are $15.00 and may be purchased at Pins
and Needles
Quilt Shoppe 208-253-4672. Reservations are required by June 16th. The
luncheon
will begin at 12:00 noon and right now is scheduled to be held at the Council Elementary
School. If we must
move to
the Council Elementary School, the luncheon will also move. We
will
probably be at the Council
Senior Center.
Updates should be available by mid April.
